Things are in balance. Even when they appear not so. The divide between “us and them” is only a perception that can be bridged with a single phone call. An invitation. A peace treaty signed with a swirly pen stroke lasting a second. We are indeed one. The space inside and around us shrinks and expands in the same way it does for an ant, a maple tree, or an orange turning gray with mold on the counter. Sure, science has figured out the different ratios; but the cells, vitamins, minerals, and elemental compounds unite the lawyer from Jersey City, the Iowa farmer, and the Las Vegas sex worker.
What makes life tick unites us all. American, Somali, Dutch or Chinese. We need food, water, and a family to tell us everything is gonna be alright when we start wondering whether there’s a monster under the bed. We need the ability to rest from our fears before they cripple us and cause us to lash out against life. Our aliveness seems to be our greatest treasure and our greatest fear, depending on the weight of the air we breathe.
